What is Vitamin B Complex?

Most people understand that B-Complex plays a vital role in maintaining good health and well-being. B vitamins, often called B-Complex, are a group of eight individual vitamins that provide essential B vitamins nutrients that your body requires for optimal health.

B vitamins are distributed in foods and are needed to support the body's many functions. Bone marrow works with B vitamins and contains stem cells that produce red blood cells, most white blood cells, and platelets. For these cells to develop, it requires numerous B-vitamins, B-2 (Riboflavin), B-6, B-9 (folic acid), and B-12.

B complex vitamins are essential in certain bodily functions, but, unlike most other mammals, our bodies have certain limitations and are not capable of producing. Therefore, we can only get the essential nutrients through foods or supplements. Probiotic supplements are a great addition, but they are not sufficient sources of vitamin B, primarily as some products work better than others. B vitamins can be found naturally in meat, leafy greens, beans, dairy, peas, and whole or fortified grains. Other good B vitamin sources are baked potato, banana, spinach, soybeans, wheat germ, cantaloupe, tuna in water, navy beans, bok choy, avocado, sunflower seeds, chicken breast, turnip greens, etc.

These vitamins are a water-soluble group of nutrients that make sure the body's cells are functioning correctly. They help prevent infections, create and support new blood cells, and directly impact our energy levels, cell metabolism, good eyesight, brain function, nerve function, cardiovascular health, and hormones, and cholesterol production.

The eight B-complex vitamins include:
    • Thiamine (B1)
    • Riboflavin (B2)
    • Niacin (B3)
    • Pantothenic acid (B5)
    • Pyridoxine (B6)
    • Cyanocobalamin (B12)
    • Folic acid
    • Biotin
Here's a closer look at each of these B complex vitamins.
      • Thiamine (Vitamin B-1) is critical for the development and growth of cells. It helps produce energy and is used for muscles, the brain, and the nervous system.
      • Riboflavin (Vitamin B-2) converts food into energy, helps with red blood cell production and growth, and assists in keeping the eyes, nervous system, and skin healthy.
      • Niacin (Vitamin B-3) is made by your body to turn food into energy.
      • Pantothenic Acid (Vitamin B-5) helps breakdown fats and carbohydrates needed for energy. B-5 also helps with the adrenal gland's production of sex and stress hormones.
      • Pyridoxine (Vitamin B-6) can be found in sports nutrition products due to the neurotransmitters in the brain and nerve cells. B-6 is used to store protein and carbohydrates from food. Biotin (B-7) is widely known for promoting growth in bones, keeping your skin, hair, eyes, and nervous system healthy. It also converts food into energy.
      • Folic acid (Vitamin B-9) is known to be crucial during pregnancy to aid in the fetus' proper development. B-9 helps make red blood cells, form DNA, and helps the risk of congenital disabilities.
      • Cobalamin (Vitamin B-12) helps maintain a healthy nervous system, nerve cells, and healthy red blood cells needed to make DNA.
